Do you know those quotes of the day calendars? Well, I get one every year for my desk, from a family member of mine, and I love them! Predictable gifts like that make me smile, and I’ve grown accustomed to receiving these every year. There is great comfort in knowing an outcome; however, we don’t always have that luxury.
It has been said that in times of great stress, people turn to the familiar to ease their anxiety. That’s why it’s not uncommon for people to re-watch a favorite tv show on Netflix, because they already know what’s going to happen, and it’s comfortable and familiar to them. This might explain why I’ve watched Friends a thousand times!
Every teacher will tell you that no one school year is alike. This is true. However, some comfort and familiarity are found in daily routines, yearly activities, and even some repeated curriculum. It’s safe to say that these types of patterns have significantly been interrupted over the last two school years!
So, how do we develop a sense of calm and establish some routines amid uncertainty? Well, first things first, it starts with a positive attitude. My most recent quote of the day read, “One small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day.” This resonated with me, so I start each day with the same thought….”Challenge accepted!”
Virtual learning? Challenge accepted. Hybrid learning? Challenge accepted. Students at different learning levels? Challenge accepted. Half the class is now in quarantine? Challenge accepted. Masks? Challenge accepted? It’s pouring down rain, and students are an extra level or stir crazy? Challenge accepted.
You get the picture.
You’ll notice that I never said, “Challenge accepted, conquered, and everything is perfect.” Why? Well, that’s not reality. However, starting each day with a positive attitude and being prepared as possible goes a long way! 2021-2022 school year? Challenge accepted!
