Supporting Student Creativity and Curiosity

By. Craig Perrier

This past weekend I was a judge at a regional National History Day (NHD) competition. The event brings together students across K-12 education to demonstrate their projects on an annually selected topic.  This year’s theme is “Debate & Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences.”  NHD was awarded the prestigious 2011 National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama for “being a program that inspires in American students a passion for history.” It really is remarkable experience to offer to students.

One of the great features about NHD is that students get to choose from a variety of “products” to demonstrate their learning. Their choices include  – a written paper, video documentary, original website, tri-fold exhibit, or theatrical performance. Students also get to decide to work either individually or with other students.   During the NHS competition, students interact with judges and guests (family, teachers, other students) to share what they learned. Take my word for it,  the students are amazing.

There are equivalents to NHD in other classes –  Science Fairs, Art Exhibits, Math Challenges – that tap into students’ creativity and curiosity. But whether it is NHD, or a similar program in a different content area, having the right supplies and hardware for students to succeed is imperative. The Educators Marketplace is a great place to stock your class.  This list is just a start of what you can find for your students to share their learning and demonstrate how great they can be.

When we design learning experiences that promote curiosity and creativity in students, things typically go well.  Add elements of student choice and the you have a great opportunity to prepare students to succeed in the future.  Thank you for all you do as teachers!
