As a student I always found it shocking to encounter one of my teachers outside of a school setting. It was as if I believed teachers only existed in the class and that they had a singular identity – teacher. It was a simple way to see things. And when I became a teacher my students mimicked the behavior I had demonstrated. The good news is that they were happy to see me!
Sometimes it feels like the public in general forgets about the other aspects of educators’ lives – spouse, sibling, parent, etc. But it is these aspects of a teacher’s life that provides the best ways to connect with students and share life lessons and experiences – both big and small.
