A few verses from the famous song “Turn, Turn, Turn” by the classic rock band the Byrds summarizes my current view of the education purpose. The song counsels,
To everything
There is a season
And a time to every purpose, under heaven
Applying this to education, it has recently felt like the school year is indeed a season of change where anything could shift. Reflecting on 2021 -2022 provides evidence to this claim. Back in the fall, our state assesses students changed – yes, after the school year began. Throughout the winter the realities of staffing changed due to unexpected exits from the profession and a scarcity of substitute teachers. This past week our school board just announced a new Superintendent.
I am guessing that you have your own list of changes that you have experienced over the seasons. From my perspective, I am happy to share a few values (in the list below) that have helped me approach change with a productive mindset. Moreover, the Educator Marketplace can help nurture this qualities.
What helps you navigate changes? As shifts and fluxes become the norm in the educational landscape it will be important to be prepared to think and act in a productive way. The school year is in its final months. During these weeks, make changes to your own persona that will benefit you and your colleagues. It’s always the right season to do that!
