Fall: Teacher Tips & Tricks

By. Meredith Biesinger

Happy National Literacy Month!

Every teacher loves to promote reading. After all, it’s a life skill that helps everybody! Some students love reading, and others don’t—there are adults like that, too! Let’s finish National Literacy Month strong with some tips and tricks to make reading fun for everyone.

Activity

1. Pick an engaging book

2. Dress up like a character in that book and have your class guess the title.

3. Read the book as a class and then discuss it.

4. Get crafty and have the class design a new book cover!

5. Write on. Have each student complete a reading response journal entry about the book.

Other FUN Ideas:

Hold a Door Decorating Contest

This is fun for everyone! Teacher friends, select a book to read together and then celebrate by helping your students decorate the door based on the book! Bonus: Get the WHOLE school involved for a super fun contest and possibly a prize or two! Find your materials here: Educational Supplies

Make Reading is Golden!” Snack Bags

Make snack bags with pretzels, goldfish, graham treats, and a chocolate treasure candy for your students. Modify for allergies, of course. Include a personalized note about how “Reading is golden, and so are YOU!” It’s sure to bring some smiles to your classroom!

Create Alternative Book Titles

Think outside the box. Select a few favorite classroom books, and have students develop an alternative title for each book based on what it’s about. Students practice reading comprehension skills when they share WHY they chose that title. This will show they understood the story or overall theme of the book.

Happy Teacher: Don’t forget about you! Treat yourself to a new book, or audio book from your reading list and enjoy some downtime—we all know October is coming, and it’s always busy!  Happy Teaching!
