Do you remember these, or similar sayings, from past or (gasp) current teachers?
“Don’t smile before winter break.” I heard that one from a mentor teacher. Or what about these gems, “Learning is hard work” or “I am difficult teacher because I care about you.” These and similar joyless sayings can contribute to a divisive culture between teachers and students. And last time I checked, such a setting is not conducive to meaningful learning.
But, thankfully, there are other mantras, ones that promote a culture of belonging and happiness. Statements like “ I believe in you”, “What are you interested in”, and “How are you feeling today?” Unlike the previous statements, these recognize that students learn better from teachers who express care.
One path to teaching with care is to be filled with and express joy. Being a joyful teacher assumes that you are also a joyful person. The Educators Marketplace can help make this idea part of your practice. The list below is just a sample of my thinking about teaching, learning, and how joy can be part of those experiences.
- Books: Whether you prefer to touch and smell your books or use a digital format, Audible, Barnes and Noble, and Book Outlet all have outstanding deals to keep your joy of learning stimulated.
- Health and Wellness: Being active had a positive impact on your emotional and mental frames. Puma, EMS, Speedo, and New Balance have offers that make your mind-body connection one to celebrate.
- Food: Who doesn’t have a sweet tooth? Likewise, who doesn’t smile when you are indulging that tooth? My M & M, Jelly Belly, David’s Cookies, and Godiva have sweet deals for your joyous indulgence.
- Hobbies: Nurturing what you like to do is important to your personal joy. Michaels, Blick Art Supplies, and Guitar Center can elevate your creative side and make like joyful.
As the school year continues into 2022, including joy as part of the learning experience is a valuable resolution to have. Cultivating joy in you class is bound to make learning more rewarding and meaningful you and your students. En-Joy!
