A Summer Challenge, Just for Teachers!

By. Meredith Biesinger

“I wonder what it would be like to live in a world where it is always June?” L.M. Montgomery

To answer this quote, I think it would be amazing at first! Then, I think it would get old. For the same reason, when people retire, they return to work or invest in a hobby. As humans, we like to go and do and feel useful. Teachers are certainly not the exception to this; I think we might be the rule!

June is quickly coming to an end, the 4th of July is right around the corner, and you will likely start focusing on your classroom again after the holiday. Try to refrain! Or, at the very least, set aside a designated time to plan, have a stopping point, and then enjoy the rest of your summer…it goes by so quickly.

If this is easier said than done, consider challenging yourself to take time for you. Here is a “Teacher’s Summer Challenge” that invites you to decompress from a hectic school year, relish every moment of summer vacation, and prepare for the best school year yet!

June 19-25 Read For Pleasure

Reading is a great way to relax. Grab a great book and read by the pool, at the beach, in a hammock, at a park, or in the comfort of your home. After having just finished helping countless students discover the joys of reading, summer is your time. Find great books here

June 26-July 3 Plan A Day Of Fun

Relaxation can also be whatever comes to mind when you think of fun: Play a round of golf, tend to a garden, visit a museum, attend a baseball game, pick berries, take photos, find geocache treasures, attend a concert, go fishing/biking/hiking/swimming/dancing, etc. Whatever you do, have fun, unwind, and decompress!

July 4-July 9 Gather With Loved Ones

It’s a holiday week! Whether you’re going to a parade, bbq, picnic, or fireworks show, be sure to be in the moment while spending time with friends and family. Talk, laugh, be present, and enjoy summer.

July 10-July 16 Create Something

Have you been wanting to paint, make jewelry, or even learn to bake something. Give this a try this week! It’s great to exercise other parts of our brain, plus it’s fun!

July 17-July 23 Pamper Yourself.

Summer is winding down, and you’ll be in-district meetings soon. Be sure to schedule a little bit of pampering for yourself. Make sure to do this now: manicure, pedicure, hair appointment, massage, or whatever pampering means to you.

July 24-July 30 Movie Night!

Whether you go to the movies or stream something in your living room, grab your friends and family some favorite snacks and watch something that will make you smile or laugh.

July 31-August 6 Healthy Planning

It’s crunch time! Walk daily for your overall health, and consider gifting yourself some ready-made dinners for yourself or your family during the first week of school. You’ll be so glad that you did this!  Will you accept this challenge? We hope so! Enjoy your summer!
