It’s Time For…Spring Cleaning!

Teresa Marchant

I find myself looking at stacks of clutter that has built over the LONG winter months and ask myself if I have a problem because I’ve seen too many episodes of the Hoarders series?

Something needs to be done because it’s not only in my classroom but at home as well. Thankfully, it’s Spring and it’s time to clean. If you are like me, do you lack motivation? These simple tips will help regardless if you are tackling the stack of papers, cleaning out a closet, or remodeling a room.

First, make a plan. It’s important to have an idea of what you want the end product to look like. If it’s a larger project, break it down into smaller tasks. Just a little bit everyday until it’s accomplished. Don’t forget to reward yourself!

Next, consider storage containers and shelving to help organize small and large items. These will save you time down the road.  Everything from fridge organizers to bins, will make your life appear less cluttered, making you feel less stressed.

Also, enlist help because you don’t go at this alone. Like the saying, “many hands make light work”. The few dollars that you may spend to pay for help is so worth it!

Don’t forget that magic of paint! If your area is feeling outdated try a little paint, pillows, a rug or other decor. Simple yet stylish additions will help you fall in love with that area again. Here’s an insider secret- I’ve gotten lots of free items at yard sales and online sites. These pieces of furniture only cost me time and some paint. Someone’s junk can definitely be a treasure. Here’s one such item.(storage container pic)

Lastly, try to recoup some money. You can either donate your stuff (make sure to get a receipt for tax purposes). Another option is to try selling at a garage sale or online site. This is a great way to pay for updates and feel good about recycling.  Happy Spring!
